did you wrong

I was never really a Pretty Ricky fan, so I never bothered to familiarize myself with the names of the various members of the group. Ironically, I over played the CD that had their song “Grind” so that just shows that I appreciated their music, however, something happened this week to make me research the group.

While waiting for my ferry to leave from Charlotte Amalie on Friday my mp3 picked up 105 Jams just in time for me to catch the end of a tune that pricked at my heart. I hadn’t a clue who the singer was, or what the name of the song was but the conviction in the singers voice, the smooth tone and the wonder symphony of the melody made me take notice. I got a clue as to who the artist was when the singer mentioned “Without Pretty Ricky”. Anyhow the time to board the ferry came and I vowed to research the song as soon as I got to BVI waters.

My busy schedule did not allow me to and it slipped my mind, but I woke on Saturday morning humming the song and rushed right to my laptop. I tried to Google the line I recalled, but I guessed I didn’t remember it as well as I thought and soon realized that I was googling the wrong tune. I gave up and just went to youtube.com and googled “Pretty Ricky”, low and behold I saw something saying that Pleasure P left Pretty Ricky so I just googled Pleasure P and there was my song “Did you Wrong.”

Apparently the song is about a man who apparently cheated on his girlfriend and decides to fight for his relationship when it appears that his girlfriend followed his lead and cheated as well. So now he is saying: “You Know I Want Yall To Just Sit Back And Think For A Second You Know What I Mean There's A Lot Of Haters Out There Hatin On People Relationships And Stuff Dont Nobody Wanna See You Happy They Always Trynnatake Ya Joy Bring You Down(No No No No Noo)But You Gotta Be The One To Stick By Yo Mate And Say Ima Be With You No Matta What U Know What Im Sayin Fuck It I Did Wrong You Did Wrong Too You Know What Im Sayin We Gotta Put Up With Each Otha Shit The Easiest Thing To Do Is Leave Ya Dig Anyway Check Dis Out”

Off hand let me say that it is one the most beautiful songs that I’ve heard in 08 so what if I had to wait until the tenth month of the year for such a masterpiece to meet my ears. I fell in love with the song when I heard the words: “I Dont Wanna Loose This Relationship So We Gotta Stay Strong Dont Wanna Move On I Know You Sick And Tired Of The Fussin And Da Fightin And Da Cussin But I Love You And You Love Me Too.”

It was interesting to hear what Pleasure P said in his chorus and hook, especially since as far as most men are concerned it is fine for them to cheat but whenever the female does the same that’s the end. So its refreshing to hear a young man say: “I Did You Wrong, you Did Me Wrong, I Take You Back, You Take Me Back, Girl I Take You Back I Take You Back. No Matta What You Do, No Matta What You Say No Matta How Far You Go Dont Take Your Love Away Because, I Love You And Girl I Want You And Girl I Need You So Lets Just Work It Out”

He really poured his heart out into this song and maybe it was just a gimmick, and if that’s the case then—he did it well. I could go on yapping about this song, but I am going to paste the lyrics so you can see what he is saying.

Let's Just

I’m still waiting for the day when the entire world will official recognize a genre that have regionally aligned itself in the heart of many in as high esteem as reggae. The day when Soca becomes as mainstream as reggae and its derivative is the hope of many.

Only recently I was listening to one of the most romantic soca songs ever recorded and I couldn’t help but wonder how the world is not marveling at this form of music. I first heard the song of which I speak in January of this year when it was already more than a year old, and like many of my favorite tunes I had only heard it partially so I was unware of the name of the artist or the song.

I spent all this time trying to find out more about it. I got to the point where I called two of the DJs from the local fm stations and hummed the song in the hopes that they would have recognized it and assist me in obtaining it, but maybe my humming was way off key because they all bursted out in laughter and assured me that they had no idea of the song of which I spoke. I finally found the song this week after combing through the archive of many soca websites, and believe me it was worth it.

To be honest the melody and the composition of this song is extremely unique, everything about it sets the mood. As you would expect it has that slow upbeat tempo one would expect from a rock steady soca song, but the romantic elements are not just confined to the lyrics themed on a gentleman who wishes to rekindle the passion his wife and him shared before they had children. No, the romantic qualities exist in the unique flute intro, and the sound of crickets chirping in the night. Believe me this is a song that you need to hear for your self. In the meantime I’m posting the lyrics to give you an idea.

Two Become One

When the Spice Girl came on the scene they were more-or-less thought of as a fun girl group, with their many upbeat songs, but that perception soon changed when they came out with their mega hit “Two Become One.”

The song itself is enough to put anyone in the mood but looking at the video takes the tune to whole new sexual high. The instrumental beat alerts the sense and causes that warm feeling to settle, coupled with the visual image of the shimmering green waters at the start of the video and my its on.

The interrupting guitar strum, the singing violin, plus the soothing soft voice of the singers casts a dizzying romantic spell on the song.

Not to mention the lighting fast effect in the video that causes an adrenaline rush.

Giving the Best that I've Got

If someone was to ask me which is the greatest love song that was ever written…I would happily state: “Giving the best that I’ve Got.”

If I ever get marry that will have to be the song that my husband and I dance to, I know its kind of pathetic but so what…can’t a girl dream. Seriously, though this song speaks to every one who was, is and will fall in love.

If you were in love then this tune takes you back to the days when your love was fresh, when you got goose pimples just thinking about your sweetheart when just the sound of their voice made your day.

If you are in love then this song makes you look forward to taking that big step with your beau, you think of the big moments, the trying times and you feel fortunate to have the person in your life and maybe even silently vow “to keep giving that person the best that you’ve got.” If you are married, this is one of the songs that takes you back to the first time you met your spouse, the day the proposal was made and the day of your wedding, especially the line that says: “We’ve loved so strong, and so unselfishly and I make a vow so I tell you now…..

If you have been in love as yet then this tune is enough to make you long for that special someone to give your best to, so that you can say..: “I bet everything on my wedding ring I’m giving you the best that I’ve got.” or even when she says: “The scales are sometimes unbalance and you bear the weight of all that have to be” However, I was sold when I heard her say: “Somebody understands me, Somebody gave his heart to me, I stumbled my whole life long, Always on my own, now I'm home. My weary mind is rested, and I feel as if my home is in your arms. Fears are all gone, I like the sound of your song, and I think I want to sing it forever.”

This song couldn’t have had a better singer, the passion and the love spoken of in the tune settles on the heart of anyone who listens to this song. There are many other hits similar to this, but “Giving the best that I’ve got” is my choice of one of the greatest love songs ever recorded.

Why

I had never been an Anne Lennox fan until the first time I heard her song ‘Why’. I love it then, but loved it more when I had my first big breakup.

Everyone has their own way of dealing with their problems, for me it is always a relief to just quietly relax to a song that verbalizes everything that I am feeling. I still remember how I felt when I heard the lines “I’ve tell myself too many times why don’t you ever learn to keep your big mouth shut. Some things are better left unsaid but they still turn the inside out.”

Anyone who has been in a serious relationship and is now at the rocky ends of it where they are still trying to figure out how they got there, yet too emotional to salvage it, can relate to this tune.

Perhaps my absolute favorite part of this song is the part where Anne said: “I’ve heard it say too many times that you’ll be better off besides, why can’t you see that this boat is sinking,” “Lets go down to the water’s edge, where we can cast away those doubts.”

The video is for me a masterpiece as throughout it Anne like a starlet who is preparing for the role of her life takes time donning her make-up throughout the video. Finishing at the end to have spotlight on her as the portrays all of the emotion and all of the rage that seemed to have boiled throughout the song as she states: “ This is the book I’ve never read, these are the words I’ve never said, this is the path I’ll never tread, these are the dreams I’ve dreamed instead, this is joy that’s seldom spread, these are the tears we shed, this is the fear, this is the dread, these are the contents of my head, and these are the years that we’ve spent, and this is what they represent, this is how I feel, do you know how I feel, cause I don’t think you know.”

Dont Wanna Lose You

No one can downplay the healing power of music or listening to one’s favorite song.

By chance I stumbled across Gloria Estefan’s music video for her song “Don’t Wanna Lose You”. The song has always been one of my favorites, but unfortunately I had never seen the video until yesterday.

To be honest it is one of those tunes that made me feel in love even though I am as single and as lonely as could be. Call me pathetic if you chose but honestly it is one of those songs that makes me long for romance and love. Maybe it’s the passion with which Gloria sang.

However, seeing the video was the icing on the cake for me. The grayscale made everything look like a dream, added to the surreal manner in which the well toned and sculpted dancers glided across the sand.

The emotions of the strong lyrics kept being accurately depicted by the dances as they clung, pulled and moved in unison. Somehow one couldn’t help getting the feeling that they got whenever you watched one of those old love stories….this video had it all from the familiar light house to the rustling grass---everything that epitomizes serenity. Like I said Gloria’s sweet voice is the icing on the cake.
